Life in the Fast Lane

My mother always told me that grass never grew under my feet because I was always on the go and never took the time to smell the roses. Well, I hate to say it Mom, but I still can't seem to find the time. This week is no exception, with the end of the school year (including kindergarten graduation ceremony for my twins) our 2nd annual Canada Day BBQ, my in-laws to town, a trip to the city to pick up a few things for the Strawberry Fest 5km Fun Run / Walk, the twins 6th birthday party and my family coming a day later. Who has time to run, oh right...I do.

Every week I get an email from the running coaches outlining the workouts for the week. This weeks theme was, "Hills Glorious Hills". Yup it's time to start training because San Francisco isn't located on the prairies. Unlike my running partner Julie, I don't have a secret passion for hill repeats, I am honesty terrified of them. However, what goes up, must come down! So tonight I head out with Julie and tackle one of the largest hills in Clearwater, over and over again.

In the past couple of weeks I have been struggling with shin splints on my left leg, that's the result of running too long in the same pair of running shoes. Who knew that running shoes had an expiration date? So with everything on the go I must make sure I take the time to sit down, ice my shins and maybe take time to smell some roses.

Why I'm Doing This

Over the past couple of years I have heard about these blogging sites and thought to myself why on earth would anyone want to know what I'm doing. Really I'm not that interesting!!! However, I sit here tonight in front of this computer creating my very first blog. Why you ask? Have I got more interesting in the past couple of years?? The answer is NO, but I am doing something that is interesting and important and I want to share it with you. Many of you that know me know I can be spontaneous, like today when I brought home a kitten and no one knew about it. Well I kind of did something similar a few weeks back.

I was out for a run one day and was thinking about how I wanted to do something more with my running. I had heard for the Virtual Team in Training for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada but had never really looked into it. When I got home I went online and did some research. The Society sponsors these amazing Marathon and Half Marathon races all over North America while participants raise funds to support patients and their families and finding a cure for blood cancers. This was it! Something I could do that could help make a difference doing something I love. There are friends in my life that have been affected and continue to be by this devastating disease and they are truly my inspirations!

The next day I got on the phone and spoke to a representative from the Society. I got so excited I phoned my running partner Julie to ask if she would do it with me. Actually, it was really her husband Devon who I asked first to see if Julie would do it with me. When his answer was NO I new for sure that she was in!

Fundraising began right away and training a couple weeks later. As more people find out what I am doing I have found that they are interested in how my training and fundraising is going. That is why I am sitting here tonight creating this blog, so those of you can keep up to date with how things are going and hopefully find inspiration to one day help make a difference doing something you love.
